Beth Kanell writes mysteries with a historical twist -- and a young adult protagonist. Add the rocks and ridges of New England, and the flavor of a regional poet, and ramp up the suspense. Connect with Beth here.
Underground Railroad? Not in Alice Sanborn's part of Vermont in 1850. But she and her friends can still do their part to see justice ... and hope to hold the Union together. At what risk?
When Alice Sanborn and her best friend Jerushah cross paths with a bounty hunter in rural northern Vermont, the teens stage a daring rescue for former slave Sarah Johnson — but winter weather, politics, and challenges of mountain life bring more danger.
In her Vermont village of North Upton in 1850, Alice knows there are strong opinions about abolition all around her. Her own family members can’t agree on the right way to end slavery for the Union. At Jerushah’s home in the inn across the road, the stagecoach brings fresh news and more opinions weekly.
Soon the two fifteen-year-olds suspect Alice’s older brother William is taking dangerous risks to shelter a fugitive hiding at the inn. When a bounty hunter reaches the area, searching for the man, Alice and Jerushah fear that Sarah could be kidnapped.
With help from the skillful but mysterious Solomon McBride, the girls head toward the wilder countryside along the Canadian border. But it’s March, their journey takes them through a snowstorm, and soon they’re in peril of another kind: a deadly illness.
Meanwhile, the bounty hunter turns his threats toward Alice’s own brother. More lives are at stake.
Is it all Alice’s fault? What should she do? Even a teen can take strong action – but which way is right, and how can she choose?
IF YOU LOVE VERMONT, you'll want to know that this exciting novel is based around the very real figures of Thaddeus Stevens, the Mero brothers, Ruth Farrow, and the powerful Fairbanks family - as well as Abolitionist Dr. Jewett.
